June 7, 2010 | 12:05 pm -- For those who got used to playing and watching high school football playoff games on the night before Thanksgiving in the City Section, those days are over for now.

Because personnel in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be taking furlough days that week, the playoff games will be held on Friday, Nov. 26, with the option to play on Saturday, the City Section announced on Monday.

Also, schools are scrambling to change schedules for the opening Friday night of the season on Sept. 10. There will be no games played on that day at LAUSD campuses because it is a furlough day. Schools can play games at non-LAUSD sites. Games are expected to be switched to Wednesday or Saturday that week because Thursday, Sept. 9 is Rosh Hashanah.

The game between City Section powers Woodland Hills Taft and Los Angeles Dorsey scheduled for Sept. 10 is likely to be moved to Sept. 11 at Dorsey.

The City Section has also finalized plans to begin charging athletes a one-time $24 transportation fee starting in September to make up for a $650,000 cut in transportation funding. Schools can raise money to pay for the student fees, City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said.

Monday was the final City Section Interscholastic Athletic Committee meeting of the school year, and Eagle Rock Principal Sal Velasco was elected as the new City Section President, replacing Heather Daims, who will become President of the California Interscholastic Federation.

IAC also voted to use $56,655 to help fund a specialist position in the athletics office that was going to be cut. The LASUD will provide funds for half of the position.

IAC voted to cut entries for tennis playoffs in individual singles and doubles. Instead of 56 entries, they will be cut to 32.
