March 17, 2013 ::  SACRAMENTO — The California Academic Decathlon Super Quiz took place on Saturday – followed by  an evening of suspense, with several questions contested by coaches at the last minute.

“We always get some challenges, but this is abnormally high,” said Thomas Vincent, president of the board of directors at the California Academic Decathlon, the nonprofit that organizes the Super Quiz. “It’s the nature of competition.”

After the challenges, the results were finally released after 11:30 p.m.

The quiz is only one part of the California Academic Decathlon — a competition that includes interviews, speeches and tests — that took place Saturday.More than 500 students hailing from 61 schools across California were represented at Saturday’s event. The awards ceremony will take place this morning.

One winner will be selected to go on to the national competition in Minnesota.

“The heart of the decathlon is that all students, regardless of their GPA, can come together to be lifelong learners,” said Ken Scarberry, executive director of the California Academic Decathlon.

The competition doesn’t require a minimum grade-point average, but team members are grouped together based on their GPAs.

.The top score, 4,725, went to Franklin High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

After the challenges, the results followed the quiz by hours.

“I contested one of the questions myself,” Ventura County Westlake High Joe Nigro said. “Some of them were very poorly worded.”

The quiz was only one part of the competition, and the winning team will be determined by results from other competitions as well as the quiz. Those results will be announced today.

Great news for LAUSD schools. Those of us that work in them and with them, know that our students, properly motivated, can compete on the state, national and world stage!
