Dear GHCHS Parents, Alumni, Community and Supporters,

Earlier today Granada Hills Charter High School’s Academic Decathlon team, for the third consecutive year, took first place in the California State Decathlon competition in Sacramento.

This year’s field was extremely competitive with the top four teams separated by less than 1,000 of the possible 60,000 points based on results from their city competitions. These year’s top competitors included Beverly Hills High School, John Marshall High School, Franklin High School and El Camino Real Charter High School. Granada Hills Charter earned 56,165 while second place El Camino Real Charter was close behind with 55,669.

Granada Hills Charter Decathletes are Jenny Baek ‘14, Jake Chong ‘14, Bea Dimaunahan ‘13, Faria Ghori ‘13, Rina Kim ’13, Kailin Li ’14, Kimberly Ly ‘13, Kelly Ma ’13, and Hamidah Mahmud ‘13. (Ly and Mahmud were members of the 2012 city, state and national championship team.) Their coaches are Mathew Arnold, Spencer Wolf and Nick Weber.

"A three-peat in the Los Angeles competition and now the state competition is exceptional!" said Executive Director Brian Bauer. "We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of this hard working and cohesive team and their exceptional coaches and will be supporting them whole-heartedly as they prepare for the national competition next month."

The decathletes, their coaches, and administrator Julia Howelman return to Granada Hills Charter tomorrow (Monday) at 7:45 AM for a celebratory "welcome back" at the school entrance.

Granada Hills Charter’s Academic Decathlon team is now the reining (sic) city and Statue   Academ  ic Decathlon champions as well as reigning back-to-back national champs. The School remains the only charter school in the over 30-year history of the National Academic Decathlon competition to claim the city and state title three years in a row and will pursue their third straight national title in Minneapolis April 25-27.

Sincerely,

Brian Bauer
Executive Director
