Cutting 52% and “Restoring” 48% “Saves” Adult Ed: STATEMENT REGARDING THE RATIFICATION OF THE LABOR AGREEMENT BY TEACHERS BY BOARD PRESIDENT MÓNICA GARCÍA

by email from BOARD DISTRICT: 2 THE CRADLE OF REFORM

Wed, Jun 20, 2012 10:06 am  ::  LOS ANGELES – Board President Mónica García issued the following statement in response to the ratification of a labor agreement by UTLA members:

“For another year in a row, employees have stepped up to preserve education.  Because they voted for shared sacrifices, over 4,700 certificated jobs have been saved.  Our communities have raised their voice for the past five years to demand more investment and end the state budget cuts.  Together we have worked hard to preserve programs and keep talented teachers and school employees that serve our children.

You asked to save Adult Education, and I'm glad we have restored 48 percent, but it's not enough until we restore all education to 100 percent.  I'm pleased that Adult Education, Arts Education and Early Education will not be eliminated and that we will keep open Evans CAS, Belmont CAS, A. Friedman Occupational Center, East Los Angeles Occupational Center, Garfield CAS, Roosevelt CAS, Lincoln CAS, East Los Angeles Skills Center, Eastside Learning Center, among many others.  We have to stand together and support the November initiatives to help the state stabilize."

Board District 2 Adult Schools remaining open:

Evans CAS, Belmont CAS, A. Friedman Occupational Center, East Los Angeles Occupational Center, Garfield CAS, Roosevelt CAS, Lincoln CAS, East Los Angeles Skills Center, Eastside Learning Center, Belvedere Learning Center, Hamasaki Learning Center, Marianna  Learning Center, Mid-City Learning Center/AEWC and Wilson CAS.

As a result of the 10-day furlough agreement with UTLA, Adult Education will receive a much-needed $45 million in additional funds for its 2012-13 budget. These funds will enable the division to bring back 61 shared and stand-alone sites that were slated for closing. The total Adult Education budget for 2012-13 – including federal dollars – is $105 million.

Glad to see Ms. García finally hired a copy editor since the past few editions of her newsletter were entitled the "craddle" of reform.

For the opportunist García to claim she restored adult education reeks of the highest forms of duplicity. She refused on multiple occasions to meet with students representatives from United Adult Students to listen to their stories of why the programs are so critical. More to the point, the 52% cut are disrupting people's lives in so many ways.

García needs to spend less time drinking Au Bon Climat chardonnay and Piper Sonoma sparkling wine with wealthy charter executives and more time talking to the people who are supposed to be her constituents.
