4 Your Review: The Shape of LA Schools to Come? - A DRAFT PLAN TO REORGANIZE LAUSD INTO FOUR+1 ‘LOCAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTERS’ - AND CREATES THE EDUCATION SILO, THE OPERATIONS SILO AND THE PARENT/COMMUNITY SILO - BEGINNING NEXT YEAR

by smf for 4LAKids

Jan 19, 2012  ::  The following plan is being floated at Beaudry and in the local districts as something between a draft plan and a done deal – apparently without consultation with the Board of Education.

4LDMap It carves four new local districts – called  “Educational Service Centers” from the current eight – maintains a special district for special schools: Pilots/Focus/Span/I-Design/Partnership schools and maybe all the new schools subject to Public School Choice v. x.x – akin to the “Superintendent’s Districts’ in other ®eform driven school districts.

It separates Education from Operations from Parent+Community Engagement in a “three legged stool” -- and leaves programs like Student Health, District Nursing, School Mental Health, School Discipline Policy,  Beyond the Bell, etc.,  unaddressed, unconsidered and in undecided limbo – maybe to be dismantled +outsourced to outside operators?

The plan seems to bring  the Facilities Division and the building and modernization program under Operations …and as a solution builds new silos and creates more questions than it answers – questions like: What are they thinking?”    …or maybe; “What?  Are they thinking?”

Can you say “Transparency and Accountability?”  Can anyone?

The plan creates a parent and community involvement effort for 763 schools and 664,000 students spread over 710 square miles of eleven staff members!  So much for parent center folks at every school. So much for Community partnerships. So much for Schools as Centers of the Community.

And as an afterthought on the last page  – Page 13  – (…and the only page marked Draft - Do Not Distribute)  - perhaps to show The Flag of Hope? - it parcels out the anticipated $278 million parcel tax from the November ballot.

Remember “The Schoolhouse?”  This is like that …but without the catchy name.
