LAUSD PRESS RELEASE
July 15, 2010 - Los Angeles—Martin (Marty) P. Galindo, who began his wide-ranging career in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) as a bilingual elementary school teacher nearly three decades ago and rose to senior management, has announced he is taking a leave of absence from the District.
He has been named the new superintendent of the Bassett Unified School District, which serves portions of the City of Industry, La Puente, Whittier and several unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. He will begin his position on July 26, 2010.
“This well-respected educator has made a difference in the lives of so many students through his work in the classroom and his management positions,” said LAUSD Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines. “Guided by research and his broad successes within the District, he has been a valuable addition to LAUSD’s senior management team.”
Committed to providing the best possible education for all students, Galindo helped shape instruction through his leadership of Local District 6, which includes LAUSD schools located in the cities of Maywood, South Gate, Huntington Park, Bell, Cudahy, Vernon and surrounding areas. Known for fostering collegial relationships with instructional staff, administrators and support staff, Galindo also excelled at encouraging parental involvement and he communicated to them the priorities of LAUSD.
During his tenure with the District, Galindo worked in many capacities including as a bilingual teacher at Fourth Street, Rowan Avenue and Woodlawn elementary schools. After serving as an assistant principal at 107th Street Elementary School, he served as principal at Broadway and Vermont Avenue elementary schools. In addition, he worked as an Operations Administrator and was Director of School Services for the LAUSD.
Superintendent Cortines has named Rowena Lagrosa as the Local District 6 interim superintendent.
smf: Marty will be missed in LAUSD and particularly in LD 6 -- and will be an asset to Bassett Unified. 4LAKids welcomes Rowena Lagrosa – most recently Superintendent of Moreno Valley USD in Riverside County, before that Local District Superintendent in LAUSD LD 5 and H – back to The District.
4LAKids feels a need to question the decision to grant Marty a Leave of Absence – not to deny him any perks which he has earned and may be entitled – but to question what this means to LAUSD’s pension obligations and seniority hierarchy. – see update 7/19
