CHARTER SCHOOL ADVOCATE CHOSEN AS VIRGINIA SECRETARY OF ED

from the US Charter Schools Resource Update

Gerard Robinson, leader of the nonprofit Black Alliance for Education Options*, a group that advocates giving black parents greater access to public charter and private education for their children, has been selected by Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's Secretary of Education.

In his new position, Robinson is expected to advance an agenda that at times may be at odds with the Virginia Education Association, the lobbying force that represents thousands of teachers in the state. Robinson said his goal for the next four years was to have an "honest dialogue as to how charter schools can advance the public school mission in Virginia."

He also said he thought local school boards should remain at least partially involved in the chartering process, something Virginia Education Association President Kitty Boitnott called "a little bit of a pleasant surprise."
