Have you ever wondered how Santa Monica-Malibu schools compare statewide and nationally? Do you really know where the money comes from to pay for local public schools? How has the State of California's budget crisis impacted SMMUSD?
Please join the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, in partnership with co-sponsors the Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs and the political action committee, Community for Excellent Public Schools (CEPS) on November 17th (Malibu) & November 18th (Santa Monica) for the Fourth Annual "State of Our Schools: How Are We Doing?" report to the community This report will include:

  • How Santa Monica-Malibu schools rate,
  • An analysis of student achievement,
  • The financial issues facing SMMUSD this year, and
  • The steps that are being taken to offset the loss of State funding due to the present economy.

The programs will feature Ms. Pam Brady, Immediate Past President of California State PTA, presenting a State perspective. ●●smf's 2¢: Have you ever wondered how they do it in other Districts?  In Santa Monica Malibu USD they have a couple of joint meetings with the Superintendent & School Board leadership, The PTA  and the Outside Fundraising/Advocacy/Political Action Committee out in the community and invite everyone in.

They engage the community, It’s not a confrontation, it’s not a photo op, it’s not an in-your-face political brouhaha at the school district or teacher’s union HQ.

If we are all so hell-bent on replicating best practices and lessons learned like they teach in business school (and we should be) let’s lake a look at at our neighbor to the west.  If you think what they do in SMMUSD is none of our business you are wrong;  I will probably be going to the meeting on Wednesday the 18th.
