22 Jan 2012 :: My recent perusal of stories about the Parent Trigger misfire in Adelanto brought me to this description of charter schools from the LA Times:
Charter schools are publicly financed, independently run and mostly nonunion.
If you look below to the citations produced when one Googles that phrase you will see that that description has become the generally accepted media norm.
This is fair, honest and correct – and skates around the issue/controversy/question as to whether charters are private schools or public schools. Charter School operators universally contend that they are public schools – often incorporating that in their name: Green Dot Public Schools.
However the Bureau of the Census – which is a part of the US Dept of Commerce – as well as a couple of federal courts – has ruled the charter schools are private schools . Recent LA Superior Court opinions have identified charter schools as private schools.
The correct boilerplate should probably be:
Charter schools are publicly financed, independently run and mostly nonunion private schools.
As entrepreneurs one would think they wouldn’t want to distance themselves from unregulated free-market capitalism and private enterprise.
