The unintended consequences: OIL SPILL COULD REDUCE SCHOOL FUNDING IN GULF STATES

June 18, 2010 -- States and school districts along the Gulf Coast are considering whether to request funding from BP as they deal with the oil spill's effect on falling revenue for schools caused by declining tourism, as well as reduced sales and income taxes. It is unclear whether the $20 billion that BP has promised to spill victims includes school funding. Officials also say they are concerned that schools located near the Gulf Coast might have to move because of student health concerns.
