JUDGE TENTATIVELY OK’s LAUSD LAYOFF CHANGES

Posted: 12/09/2010 08:09:30 AM PST - (AP) - A judge has tentatively approved changes to a layoff policy that forced young teachers out of inner-city schools in Los Angeles.

A Superior Court judge this week tentatively approved an October lawsuit settlement to shield some schools from consequences of Los Angeles Unified's "last hired, first fired" policy. However, media reports said more court hearings are scheduled.

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups sued the nation's second-largest school district, arguing the seniority policy stripped untenured staff from schools in poor neighborhoods that had high turnover rates.

One school lost more than half its staff in the past two years because of layoffs.

The ACLU wants the district to spread the layoffs among campuses.
