MARLENE CANTER IS NEWEST MEMBER OF L.A.'s ETHICS COMMISSION

LA Daily News

09/12/2009  -- Former Los Angeles school board member Marlene Canter today became the newest member of the city's Ethics Commission.

Her nomination by City Council President Eric Garcetti was unanimously confirmed by the council.

"For me, it's really a critical point that I want to look into: to make sure that everybody that runs for office can run in a way that they're not beholden -- or the perception is they're not beholden -- to anybody, so I'm going to be working very hard on that," Canter told the council.

Canter was elected to the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education in 2001 and served as its president in 2005-2007.

She authored resolutions to ban sodas and junk food in public schools -- which passed in 2002 and 2003, respectively -- making LAUSD the first large urban district in the nation to approve such bans. She also worked to improve the nutrition, taste and accessibility of school breakfasts and lunches.

Canter began her career as a special education teacher at Alta Loma Elementary. She went on to co-found Canter & Associates, a teacher training company now called Laureate Education Inc. The firm has trained more than 1 million K-12 teachers across the country.
