Aug 15, 2013  ::  On Monday, August 12, 2013, Governor Brown signed AB 1266 into law providing more explicit provisions for the protection of transgender students. The new law provides that a pupil shall be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil's records.

This bill, sponsored by Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), is the first state law of its kind and follows a recent settlement between a transgender student and the Arcadia School District, which had made him use the school nurse’s office for bathroom needs and to change for physical education class. In addition, at a school-sponsored science camp, the student was required to stay in a private cabin, chaperoned by his parents.
