4 December 2011 :: “Lucy! Where’s my white collarless shirt from Fred Segal?”
Apologies, I was just watching Clueless the other night. In an attempt at making some sort of a transition, like Cher stepped up to lend a hand after the Pismo Beach disaster in the movie, red caviar and all, local celebrities and dignitaries recently joined forces to support a good cause, the Los Angeles Unified School District’s new healthy menus. At the Haute Lunch & Haute Shopping event at Fred Segal in Santa Monica, guests got the chance to sample the new delicacies on the school menus in conjunction with the brand new “I’M IN” campaign.
Not only does the “I’M IN” program focus on fighting childhood obesity, but it also aims to keep kids in school and lower the dropout rate.
LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John Deasy explained, “We believe that serving nutritious meals in school is key to academic success and we’re glad that every person is helping to spread the ‘I’M IN’ message to communities not only in Los Angeles, but throughout the country.”
Kirsten Segal, granddaughter of Fred Segal, was thrilled to support the venture, “Education is very important to the Segal family and we’re incredibly passionate about raising awareness to improve the health and well-being of all the students. A big thank you to LAUSD for their hard work and dedication to this campaign. My grandfather Fred is definitely ‘IN’ and so is our entire family.”
Check out a bunch of photos from the event which went down on December 1st below and, to bookend my nod to my TV habits, keep an eye out for an episode of Food Network’s Chopped that features four school cafeteria chefs, all striving to provide their students with healthier lunch options.

smf: OK, ShockYa.com is a celebrity fan blog - often with links to the dubiously celebrated celebrating their fifteen minutes with their wardrobe malfunctioning. Or missing altogether.
I’m unsure of LAUSD promoting its healthy food in Santa Monica: but this story has pictures of people I know and respect in it – posing with starlets!
The article has the Superintendent (who is not pastured with a starlet) explaining the Santa Monica outreach: …spreading the I’M IN message “throughout the country”. And while Dr. Deasy is the former Santa Monica superintendent, there is no such thing as a “former Fairfax alum”. Once you’ve graduated it’s a lifetime gig!
It was in Santa Monica because there are several LAUSD schools that are located in Santa Monica. Also neighboring Pacific Palisades schools are served by Cafe LA from LAUSD.
