CORTINES DELAYS SECOND ROUND OF LAUSD REFORM PROGRAM

01/31/2011 06:28:43 PM PST - The second round of a closely watched Los Angeles Unified reform initiative - which lets outside groups bid for control of new and troubled existing campuses - has been delayed.

Superintendent Ramon Cortines announced Monday that he would delay his recommendation for so-called Public School Choice 2.0, which includes a campus that is under construction in Long Beach, just over the border from Carson.

Cortines is set to weigh proposals from outside the district and from LAUSD teams to run 10 new schools and three existing schools. His recommendations were originally slated for Feb. 22, but now will not be revealed until March 15, the district said in a statement.

The new local school, set to cater to Carson and Banning high students, is the subject of bids from LAUSD's Local District 8 and a group called MATTIE that ran a short-lived charter school in Long Beach.

After applications are reviewed by two committees, Cortines will make a recommendation to the Board of Education, which has final say over which groups run each school.
