March 30, 2009
The Honorable Barack Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, D.C. 20500Dear Mr. President:
I strongly believe that one of our nation’s most important goals is to ensure that all children benefit from the opportunities our country has to offer.
You have repeatedly demonstrated that you share this view during your public career. Therefore I am calling on you to establish an office in the White House dedicated to meeting the needs and improving the lives of America’s children.
The issues affecting our children are varied and numerous. As a result, many federal agencies administer programs that impact our children’s lives. A central coordinator within the White House would greatly enhance your Administration’s ability to maximize the overall effectiveness of existing programs and to best determine where changes or new initiatives are needed.
It could also help provide Congress with the kind of analysis needed for us to make informed legislative decisions about these programs. In short, a White House office focused on children could provide us both with invaluable insight into the conditions facing our most precious American resource and an increased ability to meet their needs. I look forward to working with you on behalf of children in this country.
My best wishes to you.
Sincerely,
Harry Reid
Majority Leader
