First Stop for 'My First Vote' Tour is North Hollywood HS

Thursday, 18 September 2008  -- A bus stopping at North Hollywood High School Wednesday isn't so unusual, but Wednesday morning, a bus with a message for students to "Express Yourself" about the upcoming election is encouraging students to think about voting, campaigns and the political process. North Hollywood High School was the first stop.

Students are being encouraged to enter the My First Vote student video project where they will produce a 60-second video asking members of their community, "When was your first vote and why was it important?"

"With 50 days until the election, now is the ideal time for the Election Express Yourself tour to come to North Hollywood High School in my board district," said School Board Member Tamar Galatzan. "I am honored that North Hollywood High is the tour's first stop in the Los Angeles Unified School District." The tour is a partnership between LAUSD, CNN and Time Warner Cable.

"Given that 21 percent of the voting population consists of an estimated 44 million 18- 29 year olds, the need for education and information is critical to the future of this country," said Galatzan.

CNN's Election Express Yourself is an interactive tour that gets students involved in campaigns, voting and the political process.

Time Warner Cable and CNN will loan cameras to schools until the contest closes October 28. The student whose interview gets the most votes on the My First Vote website will win an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C to attend the presidential inauguration.

My First Vote is designed to give high school students the opportunity to interview friends, relatives, neighbors and/or elected officials about the first time they voted and why it was important. One hundred video cameras will be distributed to approximately 100 high schools in the metropolitan Los Angeles area. Students will produce 30 to 60 second videos, which will be uploaded to a micro site and voted on to win the grand prize of a trip toWashington D.C. during the 2009 presidential inauguration.

Jueves, 18 de septiembre de 2008 - Un autobús que se detenga en la secundaria North Hollywood no tiene nada de raro, pero el que se detuvó frente a la escuela el miércoles por la mañana llevaba un mensaje muy especial para que los estudiantes se pudieran "expresar a sí mismos" sobre la elección presidencial que se avecina en noviembre. El autobús animaba a los alumnos a participar en esa elección ya sea votando o tomando parte en campañas políticas. La secundaria fue la primera parada en la gira del autobús.

Se les esta animando a los alumnos a participar en el proyecto de vídeos de alumnos "Mi Primer Voto" donde pueden producir un vídeo de 60 segundas preguntando a miembros de su comunidad, "¿Cuando votaste por primera vez y por qué era eso importante?"

"Con 50 días hasta la elección, este es el momento ideal para la gira Exprésate a Ti Mismo en la Elección que llega a la secundaria North Hollywood en mi distrito", dijo Tamar Galatzan, miembra de la junta directiva del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles (LAUSD). "Estoy honrada que la secundaria North Hollywood sea la primera parada del autobús en el LAUSD". La gira es una alianza entre LAUSD, CNN y Time Warner Cable.

"Dado que el 21 por ciento de la población votante consiste de unos 44 millones de jóvenes adultos entre 18 t 29 años, es importante la necesidad de educar y proveer información sobre el futuro de este país", dijo Galatzan.

Time Warner Cable y CNN darán cámaras a las escuelas hasta que cierre el concurso el 28 de octubre. Los alumnos cuyas entrevistas reciben la mayor cantidad de votos en la página de "My First Vote" (Mi Primer Voto) ganarán un viaje con todos los gastos pagados a Washington D.C. para asistir a la inauguración del próximo presidente.

My First Vote esta diseñado para dar a los alumnos de secundaria la oportunidad de entrevistar amigos, familiares, vecinos o lídres políticos de su comunidad sobre la primera vez que votaron y por qué era eso importante. Se distribuirán 100 cámaras de vídeo en alrededor de 100 secundarias en el área metropolitana de Los Ángeles. Los alumnos producirán vídeos de entre 30 y 60 segundos, que serán colocados en la página web y recibirán votos para determinar quien gane el viaje a Washington D.C. en enero de 2009.
