Thursday, 17 July 2008 - The Los Angeles Unified District is also looking to make changes because of the increased cost of gas, said David Palmer Deputy Director of Transportation for LAUSD.

In a year the amount of money LAUSD has spent on fuel for its 1300 busses, 400 other vehicles and gas-operated machines has increased from $9.85 million for the 2006 -2007 school year to $12.4 million in 2007-2008 for the school year, Palmer said.

Even though the amount of money the District spends on fuel has increased, they are not planning to cut field trips, rides to athletic events, or jobs because of the high price of fuel, Palmer said. Instead LAUSD is looking to buy buses that run on alternative fuel, such as compressed natural gas and propane.

The District already has the largest compressed natural gas school bus fleet in the state with 172 buses running on the fuel.
