An e-mail petition is circulating seeking to keep Proposition 98 -- guaranteeing minimum school funding -- in place.
Under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's budget proposal, per-student funding would drop to $11,626 from $11,935 in fiscal 2008-09. For that to happen, the Legislature would have to suspend Proposition 98, the constitutional spending formula that guarantees schools roughly 40% of all state revenue.
In this budget the governor proposes to cut spending for K-12 education in California to 34.3% of the reduced total.

"Quality education is the most valuable asset for present and future generations," the petition states. "Achieving it requires a strong commitment from everyone, including governments, teachers, parents, community and students themselves."

We are the grass roots out here, straining the metaphor as we grow our children. Those of you who are our children, you've done a darn fine job so far - we never say Thank You enough - but neither do you!
PLEASE CLICK AND SIGN THIS PETITION - and then dash off a note to your assemblyman and state senator; tell 'em that the kids didn't create this mess and we can't expect them to pay for cleaning it up by sacrificing their futures, their friends' futures - the next generation's future.
Few of those are left that remember that FDR invested our way out of the Great Depression. This bubble bursting ain't the GP - but the ones who went before left the plan.
